Charles Hollis Jonesdesign vision

"We use our workshop as a testing laboratory to generate forms and evolve technical resolution. we try to generate something real/fundamental by understanding basic effects of material, volume and action. at the same time we invest significant resources in technical and production research to ensure the large scale viability of our products".
They describe their organic approach to design as a ‘process of discovery’. The function is not predetermined. Through experimenting with materials, volume and action an end product might emerge as a seat, a light or some sculptural fantasy. The application is found in the form itself, ‘the idea falls out of life, the form falls out of the idea’.

"Our pieces, like life in Australia, are equally at home inside or outside. we take our inspiration from the natural world at all its scales: from micro to macro".

materials/manufacturing processes

_k/f investigate material + action! k/f aim to produce pure self-evident functional forms which explore fundamental effects and responses using pure materials. we continue to explore the potential for interaction with objects through reconfigurability, surprise and transformation.

"Repetition/rhythm/complexity/reconfigurability are for us the important elements that prompt this adventure of perception. This kind of thinking is also at the root of the design for our Weblight, which is formed of acrylic covered with stainless steel and LEDs. Emitting a zigzag line of light, Weblight can be used singly or in a series as a partition or complex light sculpture - linking the modules in a chain generates surprising levels of complexity. We hope to impart surprise and discovery through these kinds of transformations".

"Minimum material/maximum volume: _we apply simple actions to pure materials to produce our pieces _metal processes: rolling, wrenching, bending, folding, welding, polishing _flow/molding processes: metal spinning/ aluminum casting/ rotational molding the membrane chaise uses a special Australian mining industry process to produce its precision spiral wound stainless steel mesh".

product focus

"We explore simple geometries, and the effects of simple actions to generate compelling and desirable forms. many pieces are monocoque constructions where structure is surface, simplifying manufacture and minimizing processing".

future aspirations

"We investigate: _material and action: forms evolved directly from action applied to material. _volume/surface/edge: smooth transformations: pure fluid morphing volumes. _transparency and the topographic mutability of new technology materials. We continue to explore these themes in all scales of project from small objects to large abstract installations".lease visit: www.artplusindustry.com for more information.
